Two Republican lawmakers want to force the Chinese government to look at a reminder of its own history every single time it opens its mail.
U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida and Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee introduced the “Tiananmen Square Memorial Act of 2026.” If passed, the legislation would officially rename the street directly in front of the Chinese Embassy Compound in Washington, D.C., to “Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard.”
The move marks the 37th anniversary of the 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Beijing. Under the text of the bill, the specific stretch of road along International Place Northwest would change names, effectively forcing the Chinese Embassy to change its official mailing address from 3505 International Place NW to “1 Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard.”
The bill also directs the Administrator of General Services to construct street signs featuring the new name. The signs would mimic the design used by the District of Columbia to designate Metro stations and would be placed on nearby federal property and key surrounding intersections, including International Drive Northwest, Van Ness Street Northwest, and International Place Northwest.
The lawmakers frames the bill as a direct response to China’s ongoing actions and its handling of historical events.
“Thirty-seven years ago, the world witnessed the true brutality of the Chinese Communist Party when countless peaceful demonstrators were murdered in cold blood for opposing the communist regime,” Senator Rick Scott said in a statement. “The regime has shown no remorse for this horrific event, has never taken accountability, and continues to commit severe human rights violations to this day. In memory of the courageous victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre, I am honored to lead this legislation to condemn the heinous human rights abuses committed by the Chinese Communist Party and pay tribute to the lives lost on that horrific day.”
Representative Andy Ogles echoed those sentiments, pointing to the symbolic weight of changing the physical space outside the embassy gates.
“China is ruled by the immoral, genocidal Communist regime,” Ogles said. “Tomorrow marks 37 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre, when the Chinese government attacked its own people, mowing them down in the streets and murdering thousands of innocent demonstrators. As the CCP continues its reign of terror, America must unequivocally condemn its human rights abuses and honor the victims who were slaughtered in 1989. I am proud to partner with Senator Rick Scott to rename the street outside the Chinese Embassy. The CCP may try to erase history, but we will not forget.”
