HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A medical emergency behind the wheel sent a Riverview woman careening across Interstate 75 Thursday morning, sparking a rescue effort by a quick-thinking State Trooper.

The crash occurred just after 9:30 a.m. near the 257 Milepost. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 57-year-old woman was driving a Chrysler 300 northbound when she suffered a medical episode.

The vehicle veered into the center median, striking the guardrail, before shooting back across the northbound lanes. The car finally came to a halt after hitting a second guardrail at the exit to US-301.

An FHP Trooper arrived to find the driver unresponsive inside the vehicle. The Trooper immediately broke out the passenger window to climb inside and render aid. Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office also arrived on the scene to assist with life-saving measures.

Emergency crews transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
