A violent multi-vehicle collision involving at least two semi-tractor trailers has forced a total shutdown of the southbound Florida’s Turnpike this afternoon. The wreck occurred just south of the Palm City exit near Jupiter, creating a massive debris field that has brought one of the state’s busiest arteries to a complete standstill.
First responders arrived to find a tangled mess of heavy machinery and passenger cars. Because of the scale of the wreckage, authorities have confirmed that the southbound lanes will likely remain closed for a significant duration as crews work to clear the mangled vehicles and investigate the cause of the pileup.
The impact isn’t limited to southbound commuters. Rubbernecking and emergency vehicle activity have triggered heavy delays for northbound drivers, turning the entire stretch of the Turnpike into a gridlock zone.
“The southbound lanes in this area are completely shut down and will likely remain closed for quite some time while first responders work the scene,” officials noted in an initial assessment of the site.
At this hour, the extent of injuries remains unknown as paramedics continue to evaluate those involved at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol has officially taken the lead on the investigation. They are currently working in tandem with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit to manage the fallout, manually diverting southbound traffic off the highway to prevent further backups.
Local authorities are urging all motorists to stay clear of the area and seek alternate routes like I-95 or U.S. 1 until the scene is processed and the roadway is deemed safe for travel.
