A 61-year-old Florida woman has been arrested and charged with killing her husband by stabbing him more than 140 times.
Joan Burke, 61, appeared before a judge Sunday in a video conference to face the grisly charges.
Palm Springs Police Department said Burke’s son called police from the couple’s home on Feb. 11. Police say the man told them that he discovered the body of his step-father, 62-year-old Melvin Weller.
Weller’s family told authorities he was physically disabled.
When police arrived, they found Burke lying in a bed. She was conscious and alert, but remained silent, according to police. Burke was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The autopsy revealed that Weller also suffered a skull fracture from a blow to the head with a meat cleaver.
Police say a motive is not yet known.
Burke has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
