Florida Woman Sues Imaging Center After Breast Implant Crushed During Mammogram

A publicly traded diagnostic imaging service has been sued for improper handling of a woman’s breasts in preparation for conducting a mammogram.

The female plaintiff filed suit on March 24 against Akumin Corporation, which is headquartered in Plantation, Florida.

The company owns or operates numerous multi-state service sites including a Palm Harbor location associated with the suit. Their imaging procedures include MRIs, CT scans, PET scans, ultrasounds, x-rays, mammography, and other interventional services.

In March 2019, the plaintiff attended her appointment for mammography, indicating to staff members that she had breast implants.

According to the lawsuit, she was informed that the radiologic technologist would move her breast implant “back and out of the way of the breast tissue” for some of the images. She was also allegedly told she might experience some “slight discomfort” in the process.

But exquisite pain occurred when the technologist “negligently and carelessly applied excessive compression” which damaged the breast implants, according to the lawsuit.

She is claimed to have suffered an “intracapsular rupture circumferentially throughout her left breast implant and further tissue damage to her breast.”

The Plaintiff’s attorney, Michael J. Trentalange of Trentalange and Kelley, Tampa said, “There was no defect noted in the implant, no pre-existing issues. The only reason for this rupture is excessive force…you’re not supposed to slam a woman’s breast into a mammogram such that you rupture the implant. If you do it right, that doesn’t happen…But medical and insurance companies like to slant matters to the patient’s fault.”

When asked if medical professionals are required to inform breast implant patients of potential risks with mammograms, Trentalange responded, “Informed consent, which is a document patients sign, is a case of ‘unequal knowledge.’ Patients need to be told the facts, but informed consent has become formality instead of substance.”

  1. I’ve often believed there is little reason for squishing a woman’s breasts in those torture devices. In fact, until they start squishing a man’s testicle in those same devices, instead of gently fondling them, should they ever prepare a woman’s breast in that way. They are doing irreparable damage to our tissues. Zero tolerance to breast torture!!!
