Florida has officially surpassed a major law enforcement milestone, cutting checks for more than 10,000 new recruits through its Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program. Governor Ron DeSantis traveled to Naples on Thursday to announce the latest figures, noting that the state has now funneled over $67.9 million into the initiative since its 2022 launch.

The program, designed to bolster police departments across the state, offers a one-time $5,000 after-tax payment to newly hired or relocated officers. The most recent wave of funding distributed more than $5 million among 744 officers.

DeSantis tied the program’s success to a shift in national dynamics, stating, “Many of these new recruits have relocated to Florida from states where law enforcement has been defunded or demoralized by radical political agendas.” He added that the state is fortunate to have them and that “Floridians are grateful for their service every day.”

Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly joined the Governor, describing the 10,000-bonus mark as a “tremendous achievement.”

Kelly noted that the payments are intended to help families get settled while simultaneously strengthening local neighborhoods. Beyond the immediate cash incentive, the program functions as a centerpiece of a broader legislative push.

The current 2025-26 fiscal budget includes $49 million earmarked for pay raises affecting over 16,200 state-sworn officers. This funding has bumped the minimum base pay to $60,000 and secured raises of 10% for entry-level personnel and 15% for veteran officers.

The state’s recruitment strategy also extends into education and long-term benefits. Florida has established high school law enforcement tracks and the Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program, which covers training costs for those entering the field.

For those already on the force, the state offers a package including student loan forgiveness, specialized home loan programs, and expanded mental health and wellness resources.

As the program continues, officials emphasize that these incentives are part of an ongoing effort to maintain Florida’s reputation as a “law-and-order state.”
