A federal appeals court heard arguments on Friday regarding Florida’s controversial ban on Medicaid coverage for transgender individuals seeking hormone therapy and puberty blockers.

The lawsuit, filed in 2022, challenges a state rule and subsequent legislation that prohibits Medicaid reimbursement for these treatments. Plaintiffs argue that the ban violates federal health care laws and the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The state defends its position, claiming the right to determine which medical services are covered by Medicaid and asserting that the treatments in question are experimental and not medically necessary. However, the plaintiffs contend that the state’s decision is discriminatory and lacks scientific basis.

The case hinges on whether the state can deny coverage for specific treatments based on gender identity. The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for the rights and access to healthcare for transgender individuals in Florida and potentially other states.
