As Ukraine begs for weapons from, and intervention by, the West, and as Russia’s nuclear forces remain on high alert during its war with its neighbor, President Joe Biden flees his command post for the friendly confines of his home in Delaware.
Biden returned to his native state Friday afternoon. It was the second consecutive weekend he spent at his Delaware home following the Russian invasion.
Biden, though, won’t be alone. DelawareBusinessNow.com reported that Biden on Saturday was expected to entertain Labor Secretary Marty Walsh for a meeting with national presidents of labor unions.
According to a White House press release, Biden met with 39 presidents of national labor unions “to discuss issues impacting union members and how the administration can help support working Americans.”
It was the second time in roughly two weeks that Biden met with labor leaders. On Feb, 17, a week before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he huddled with 10 presidents of national labor groups to talk about the American Rescue Plan.
Last September, The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and Robert Costa wrote a book about Biden’s early days as president. They reported that Biden thinks of the White House as the “tomb” and thus on weekends prefers instead “relaxing with the grandkids back in Delaware.” And more recently some union bosses.
On Friday, before Biden, who as a senator traveled home to Delaware every night by train, was set to fly to his home base, he met with Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto about the situation in Ukraine and the value of NATO, which Finland is considering joining.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was denouncing NATO for not imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine to halt Russian air attacks.
Biden has said, including in his recent State of the Union address, that a no-fly zone is a nonstarter.
“All the people who will die starting from this day will also die because of you. Because of your weakness, because of your disunity,” Zelenskyy said of NATO in a video released on Friday.
