Former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum was taken back into custody in Baldwin County, Alabama, on Thursday, Aug. 6, following an alleged missed drug screening and a subsequent positive test for methamphetamine.
The arrest comes roughly a month after the 47-year-old former Florida gubernatorial nominee was initially taken into custody on July 2 in Daphne, Alabama.
In that incident, law enforcement reported finding Gillum in possession of 3 grams of methamphetamine, eight pre-rolled marijuana joints, a bong, three pipes, and additional drug paraphernalia. He was charged with multiple felony drug counts and released on July 3.
According to jail records and a court order of commitment signed by Baldwin County District Judge Scott Taylor, Gillum’s re-arrest was ordered for a “missed CC drug test and pos in court for meth did admit.”
Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford stated that Gillum failed to report for a scheduled drug screening and subsequently tested positive for methamphetamine during a court appearance on Thursday.
Court documents indicate references to drug court, a rehabilitation-focused diversion program for first-time drug offenders that can lead to the dismissal of charges upon successful completion.
Gillum, who lost the 2018 Florida governor’s race to Ron DeSantis, previously faced legal scrutiny in 2020 following an incident in a Miami-area hotel room where police located suspected crystal methamphetamine.
No charges were filed in that matter, and Gillum denied using methamphetamine, later entering treatment for alcoholism. In May 2023, a federal jury acquitted Gillum on one count of financial fraud and deadlocked on remaining charges stemming from a 2022 public corruption indictment.
Gillum is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Aug. 13.
