Former Representative Gauging Support for Run in 2026 After Prison Sentence for Campaign Finance Misuse
Former Democratic Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., whose political career was derailed by a federal corruption conviction, is reportedly exploring a potential return to Congress. Sources indicate Jackson is actively engaging with community members to gauge the viability of a run for his old seat in Illinois’s 2nd congressional district in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
Jackson, son of influential civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson, served time in prison after pleading guilty in 2013 to misusing over $750,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses. He was released in 2015 after approximately 18 months in federal custody.

His legal troubles were compounded by concerns about his mental health, including a bipolar diagnosis.
Despite his past, a groundswell of support is reportedly emerging, with figures like community activist Hermene Hartman and former longtime Democratic Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush urging him to “Run Jesse Run.”
The opportunity for Jackson’s potential comeback arises as the 2nd congressional district seat is set to be open. Incumbent Democratic Illinois Rep. Robin Kelly is vacating the position to run for the Senate, seeking to replace the retiring Democratic Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin. Kelly originally filled the seat in a special election following Jackson’s resignation in 2012, which was prompted by his health issues, marital struggles, and the burgeoning federal investigation.
Supporters point to Jackson’s experience and perceived ability to navigate the political landscape. “He knows how to cross the aisle, he knows how to be persuasive, he knows the rules of government, and for that reason, I think this is his time to run for Congress,” Hartman told ABC7 Chicago.

The Jackson family remains prominent in Illinois politics, with Jesse Jackson Jr.’s brother, Democratic Illinois Rep. Jonathan Jackson, currently representing the neighboring 1st congressional district.
Jesse Jackson Jr.’s past legal woes involved a guilty plea to wire and mail fraud alongside his now-ex-wife, former Chicago City Council Alderman Sandi Jackson, who also faced charges related to the campaign finance scandal. The period was profoundly difficult for the Jackson family, as expressed by Rev. Jesse Jackson in 2013. “This has been an extraordinarily difficult time for our family. I speak really today as a father,” he told ABC7. “Jesse’s been very sick. This time a year ago I really thought we may have lost him. I think he’s strong enough now to accept the challenges put before him by the judge. This has been a very painful journey for our family.”

As Jackson tests the waters, the political landscape of Illinois’s 2nd congressional district could see a familiar, albeit controversial, figure vying for a return to Washington.
