Federal immigration authorities arrested a former reality television contestant from Latvia in San Francisco this week, citing an expired visa and a history of criminal convictions and arrests in the United States.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents took 38-year-old Roberts Nemiro into custody on July 28 following a referral from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Nemiro, who previously appeared on “Dejo ar zvaigzni!”—the Latvian adaptation of the “Dancing With the Stars” franchise—is currently in removal proceedings to face deportation.
According to officials from the Department of Homeland Security, Nemiro initially entered the U.S. on a temporary visa in October 2011. Federal records indicate he remained in the country after his visa expired in August 2012.
Over his time in the country, Nemiro accumulated a criminal record that includes convictions for aggravated assault with a firearm and disorderly conduct. His law enforcement history also includes prior arrests for battery, sexual battery, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“This illegal alien from Latvia may have once had a career as a professional dancer on TV, but has turned into a career criminal,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis in a statement released Thursday. “ICE was able to arrest this criminal and get him off our streets, and he will soon be deported from our country.”
Federal authorities confirmed that Nemiro will remain in ICE custody pending the completion of his immigration hearings and subsequent deportation proceedings.
