A former middle school teacher in Maryland has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old student.
Melissa Curtis, 32, pleaded guilty in June to three counts of third-degree sex offense. The charges stem from incidents that occurred in 2015 when Curtis was a 22-year-old teacher at Montgomery Village Middle School.

According to court documents and reports, Curtis engaged in sexual acts with the victim, who was a student volunteer in an after-school program she ran. The abuse reportedly continued for months and involved providing the victim with alcohol and marijuana.
Curtis was sentenced on November 15th. She will serve 12 months in prison, with the remaining 28 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation.
She will also be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and is prohibited from having unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children.
