Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday she will not seek the California governorship next year, a decision that immediately intensified speculation about a potential third run for the White House in 2028.

Harris, who served as Vice President until January of this year, released a statement indicating her focus remains on the national political landscape.

“Over the past six months, I have spent time reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history and the best way for me to continue fighting for the American people and advancing the values and ideals I hold dear,” Harris said. While acknowledging her deep affection for California and its people, she ultimately concluded, “I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”

This announcement brings to a close months of anticipation regarding Harris’s next political move, following her defeat in last year’s presidential election to Donald Trump. Sources close to Harris indicated she had been weighing a gubernatorial bid, another presidential campaign, or a complete withdrawal from electoral politics.

Harris’s statement made no direct mention of President Donald Trump but alluded to the current political climate, stating, “our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis.”

She affirmed her commitment to public service outside of elected office for the time being, adding, “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.”

A run for governor would have seen Harris enter a crowded field to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom, where she would have been a front-runner due to her widespread name recognition, fundraising capabilities, and proven track record in statewide elections, including as Attorney General and District Attorney of San Francisco.

However, after years on the national and international stage, questions had persisted about her interest in returning to state-level politics.
