HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A Brooksville man will spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to killing a victim and dumping the body near a Cortez Boulevard business two years ago.

R.W. Resca Jr., 55, was sentenced on December 18 to life in the Florida Department of Corrections for Second-Degree Murder. Additionally, the court handed down a concurrent 15-year sentence for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. The sentencing comes just a month after Resca was adjudicated guilty on both counts.

The case dates back to the afternoon of November 21, 2023, when the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a report about a suspicious situation on the east side of the county. A caller reported seeing what appeared to be a deceased person near the back of a dead-end road off Cortez Boulevard, noting a “strong, foul odor” in the area.

Fire Rescue crews arriving at the scene confirmed the individual was deceased and already in the early stages of decomposition. Authorities noted immediate signs of homicidal violence.

The investigation moved rapidly.

Once the victim was identified, detectives zeroed in on Resca as a person of interest. He was located and brought in for questioning shortly after the body was found. Within 10 hours of the initial 911 call, Resca provided a full confession to detectives regarding both the murder and the disposal of the body.

Investigators determined the killing was an isolated incident that was domestic in nature. The identity of the victim is being withheld under Marsy’s Law.
