A Utah courtroom viewed surveillance footage capturing the crucial hours leading up to the September 2025 fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The video, presented during a preliminary hearing for suspect Tyler Robinson, details what prosecutors describe as a calculated, hours-long scouting mission across the Utah Valley University campus.
The courtroom viewing sparked a legal debate between prosecutors and the defense. The prosecution hoped to present enhanced versions of the security videos, which featured digital highlights like circles and zoomed-in angles to help identify the suspect.
However, Fourth District Judge Tony Graf sided with the defense’s objections, meaning only the raw, unedited surveillance footage was officially shown in court.
Journalist Megyn Kelly recently highlighted the timeline on her show, where her production team applied their own visual enhancements to the public footage to trace the suspect’s movements. According to the timeline detailed by investigators, a man believed to be Robinson first arrived at the university campus at 8:30 a.m.
State witness Sergeant David Hull testified that during this initial visit, the suspect made direct contact with Turning Point USA representatives. The interaction took place near the outdoor amphitheater where Kirk was scheduled to speak.
Authorities suggest the suspect was gathering details about the event’s timing and layout. After roughly an hour of scouting the area, the suspect was filmed returning to the campus parking garage at 9:24 p.m., leaving the school grounds.
According to prosecutors, Robinson returned to the campus shortly after his first departure. Surveillance footage from this second visit shows the suspect walking around the campus with a backpack and purchasing a Chick-fil-A sandwich.
“The man would then go to a wooded area and leave campus again around 11:00 a.m.,” Kelly noted during her broadcast, pointing out that this second trip lasted about an hour.
A third segment of footage later captured the suspect returning to the university campus once more, though investigators noted a distinct change in his appearance, including a different outfit.
Robinson, 23, is currently facing charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. He turned himself in to law enforcement on September 11, 2025, following a 33-hour search.
The defense has not yet entered a formal plea on his behalf, while the state continues to pursue the death penalty. Judge Graf is expected to decide whether the state has presented sufficient evidence to send the case to a full trial.
