Fox News’ Brit Hume Dissects Mamdani’s ‘Affordability’ Focus As Classic ‘Big Government’ Play

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume suggested that Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani’s constant focus on “affordability” is a familiar Democratic strategy of running on economic issues.

During an appearance on Special Report with Bret Baier, Hume commented on Mamdani’s platform, which includes universal child care, free buses, city-run grocery stores, and a rent freeze on stabilized apartments.

Hume argued that while the language is appealing, especially amid inflation and a difficult job market, the proposals rely heavily on “taxpayer money being used to subsidize people to provide all these wonderful free services.”

Hume expressed doubt about the long-term success of these “big-government solutions,” noting that the country has “turned away from that in the past.” However, he acknowledged that New York’s liberal electorate “seem prepared to try it all again.”

Mamdani currently holds a significant lead in the mayor’s race, polling at 46% of likely voters according to a September New York Times/Siena College poll.

His strongest support comes from younger and highly educated voters. Former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo trails at 24%, followed by Curtis Sliwa at 15% and Democratic Mayor Eric Adams at 9%. Mamdani recently declared at a rally that his campaign had “won the battle over the soul of the Democratic Party.”
