Just four days before a jury was set to be seated for a highly anticipated murder trial, the legal proceedings against Derek Rosa came to a sudden, quiet end. Rosa, now 15, appeared in court Friday to plead guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the 2023 stabbing death of his mother, Irina Garcia.
The plea deal closes a case that has disturbed the South Florida community since the night of October 13, 2023. Rosa, who was 13 at the time, attacked his mother while she slept in their Hialeah apartment.
According to authorities, 39-year-old Garcia was stabbed 46 times. In a harrowing detail revealed by investigators, Rosa’s two-week-old sister was lying in a crib next to the bed throughout the attack.

The date of the killing appeared to be significant to the teenager. Prosecutors alleged that Rosa had expressed a desire to emulate “Jason,” the fictional killer from the Friday the 13th film franchise.
The brutality of the crime stood in stark contrast to Rosa’s public profile. According to reports, he was an eighth-grade honor student with no documented history of mental health issues. However, a darker narrative emerged during pretrial hearings where the defense attempted to suppress evidence.
Prosecutors stated that earlier on the day of the murder, Rosa showed his girlfriend a graphic video of a U.S. Army veteran committing suicide, an act that led her to break up with him. Following the stabbing, Rosa reportedly took selfies with his mother’s body and texted them to a friend. He subsequently confessed to the killing, first to a 911 operator and later to detectives.
The emotional toll of the crime was laid bare during the sentencing phase. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle reflected on the victim’s final moments.

“The pain Irina Garcia suffered from the 46 stab wounds could only have been surpassed by the knowledge that the person killing her was her own young son,” Rundle said, according to Local 10. “When he stole his mother’s life, he also stole so much of his own future.”
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Rosa was charged as an adult and received a 25-year sentence. He will receive credit for the two years he has already served in jail.
Following the completion of his sentence, he is mandated to serve 20 years of probation. The court also issued a permanent no-contact order, barring Rosa from any interaction with Ramos or his younger sister.
