Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett ignited a fresh wave of controversy Thursday night, using a livestream address to accuse President Donald Trump of directly fostering an environment that has led to black Americans being “strung up” in the South.

The comments from the Democratic lawmaker come just days after she faced scrutiny for making unsubstantiated claims against EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin regarding donations from Jeffrey Epstein during a House floor debate.

Speaking to her online audience, Crockett argued that the current administration is attempting to erase the concept of white supremacy while racially motivated violence rises.

“They not even gonna, honestly, they about to outlaw the idea of white supremacy and white hate. Like they are about to be like, ‘Oh, that’s not a thing,’” Crockett said. “Forget the fact that you’re talking about getting rid of like the classification for nuisance in a time in which we have seen these random black bodies be strung up down south.”

The Representative’s remarks appear to reference the discovery of two men—one black and one white—found hanging from trees in Mississippi in September. However, law enforcement findings contradict the implication of foul play or lynching in at least one of those cases.

According to the Associated Press, an autopsy determined that 21-year-old Delta State University student Demartravion “Trey” Reed died by suicide.

Crockett, however, doubled down on the connection to the President, suggesting his return to office has acted as a signal for extremists.

“Also, seemingly at a time in which you’re back in office because what you do is you embolden the hate,” Crockett told viewers. “You embolden everybody to take off their hoods. That is what he has done. He is the one that is producing this violence.”

The accusations of inciting violence land against a backdrop of significant threats against the President himself. During the 2024 campaign, Trump survived two separate assassination attempts—one at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another while golfing in Florida.

Thursday’s livestream is the latest in a string of polarized statements from the Texas Democrat.

Crockett recently drew criticism for comparing ICE enforcement to “slave patrols” and for mocking Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s use of a wheelchair, calling him “hot wheels“.
