From All-Star Athlete To Bedbound: Chicago Teen Fights To Reclaim Life Stolen By Chronic Lyme Disease

For 17-year-old Evan Mielnicki, life was once defined by the relentless pursuit of excellence. A dedicated competitive golfer and hockey player, Evan maintained a grueling training schedule, a disciplined diet, and an academic record that earned him the highest GPA of his school career. He embodied a healthy, balanced, and highly ambitious lifestyle—until a sudden and devastating illness completely derailed his world.

In a dramatic shift that began subtly in the summer of 2024, Evan’s life transitioned from the golf course and ice rink to a state of near-constant debilitation.

The Alarming Decline of an Athlete

The first signs were an inexplicable onset of extreme anxiety and nervousness, signaling the start of a severe nervous system deregulation. By the fall, Evan was battling constant colds and illnesses, yet he continued to push through, unaware of a deeper, systemic infection taking hold.

The breaking point arrived in February 2025 during a golf tournament in Orlando, Florida. Upon returning home, his health plummeted. Initially diagnosed with walking pneumonia and treated with multiple rounds of steroids, Evan’s condition only worsened, prompting him and his family to seek more definitive answers.

“It felt as though my body was failing me one piece at a time,” Evan recounts. “The athlete who spent hours training each day is now mostly bedbound.”

A Diagnosis of Devastation

After months of doctor visits, Evan was connected with Dr. Laureen Wu, a holistic physician who immediately suspected Lyme disease. Comprehensive testing confirmed a harrowing diagnosis: chronic Lyme disease, alongside dangerously high levels of Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) and mycoplasma.

As the illness progressed, further testing revealed a cascade of severe co-infections and syndromes, including:

  • High levels of Mold Toxicity and Arsenic Poisoning.
  • POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome).
  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).
  • Post-Exertional Malaise and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

Exhausted Options and Fleeting Hope

Determined to fight, Evan and his father traveled to New York for intensive ozone therapy under Dr. Howard Robbins, including multiple 10-pass treatments. While these sessions offered minor, fleeting improvements, the relief was temporary.

Back in Chicago, Evan continued his demanding ozone therapy regimen until his veins began collapsing from overuse. Even after scaling back, the symptoms returned “even stronger,” leaving him in a state of physical and emotional exhaustion.

Today, Evan battles a relentless array of symptoms: bone-deep fatigue, severe joint pain, chronic headaches, debilitating brain fog, dizziness, heart palpitations, and relentless anxiety. Simple tasks are now insurmountable, and even minimal physical activity triggers debilitating post-exertional crashes.

The Last Hope: Treatment Abroad

Despite the overwhelming reality of his condition, Evan refuses to surrender his future.

“This disease has taken nearly everything from me: my strength, my independence, my passions, and the sense of normalcy I once knew. Yet, I refuse to give up,” he asserts.

After exhausting all available domestic options, Evan has made the life-altering decision to seek care at Klinik St. Georg in Germany. Known as one of the most advanced centers globally for treating chronic Lyme disease and its complex co-infections, the clinic’s integrative approach represents Evan’s final, and most promising, avenue for recovery.

Unfortunately, the cost of this international, intensive treatment is significant and beyond the family’s means. Evan is now appealing to the public for help, humbly asking for donations to fund the care that could restore his health and allow him to live the active, fulfilling life that chronic illness stole from him.

“Every donation, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to healing,” Evan states. “One step closer to walking without pain, studying without fatigue, and living the active, fulfilling life that Lyme disease stole from me.”
