Stealing a rental car is one thing, but trading four wheels for a bicycle usually isn’t part of the ideal getaway plan.
Thaddeus Thane Jackson, 41, was arrested on June 26, 2026, by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Jackson now faces charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and failing to register as a convicted felon.
The case kicked off on June 21, 2026, when deputies responded to a report of a stolen Ford rental car at the Isla Bella Beach Resort & Spa in Marathon. Investigators reviewed security footage from the resort and gathered evidence, setting off a search for the missing vehicle. It didn’t take long for the car to turn up; on June 23, the Key West Police Department found the rental sitting in a Fairfield Inn parking lot.
The real twist came the next day, June 24, when deputies spotted Jackson riding a bicycle. They stopped him and discovered he had failed to register as a convicted felon, a legal requirement following a 2024 conviction in Miami-Dade County for battery on a person 65 or older.
While processing the stop, deputies realized Jackson perfectly matched the description of the suspect caught on the resort’s security cameras.
During questioning, Jackson confessed to stealing the Ford. He also cooperated enough to tell detectives exactly where he left the keys. The Sheriff’s Office recovered the keys and returned them safely to the rental car company.
