From Paint To Poetry: Shaq Nabs Second LSU Master’s Degree To Revolutionize Athlete Mentorship

The Big Aristotle’s Latest Ring: Shaq Scores Second Master’s Degree from LSU to Rewrite the Athlete Mentorship Playbook

Dr. Shaquille O’Neal added another prestigious accolade to his resume today, officially graduating from Louisiana State University with a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts. This marks the second master’s degree for the basketball Hall of Famer and LSU alumnus, who already holds a doctorate in education.

For his degree requirements, O’Neal authored a thesis titled, “Interdisciplinary Approach to Mentorship through the lens of the epic poem – ‘The Odyssey’.” The research directly aligns with his ongoing work as a mentor to contemporary athletes, drawing parallels between the ancient Greek epic and the modern sports journey.

O’Neal’s decision to enter the graduate program stemmed from a specific gap he identified in the sports world: the total absence of high-level professional or former professional athletes working as certified sports psychologists.

According to O’Neal, he recognized a critical need for a firsthand, elite perspective in the field, noting that he “saw the need to have the first-person perspective of what it is like to be a professional athlete to help mentor those coming up.”

With the completion of his MALA degree, O’Neal intends to utilize his academic research and personal experience to build a framework for mentoring the next generation of competitors.

The newly minted degree adds to a long list of achievements for O’Neal, both on and off the basketball court. Over a 19-year NBA career, he won four NBA championships—three with the Los Angeles Lakers and one with the Miami Heat—and was named the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2000. A 15-time All-Star and three-time Finals MVP, O’Neal was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016 and selected to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

His academic track record is equally extensive. After leaving LSU early for the 1992 NBA Draft, O’Neal fulfilled a promise to his mother by returning to complete his bachelor’s degree from LSU in 2000. He later earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from University of Phoenix in 2005 and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Barry University in 2012.
