HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A lengthy investigation spanning two states culminated last week with a significant prison sentence for a former Spring Hill resident. On November 20, 2025, a judge adjudicated Jonathon Caleb Smith guilty on ten counts of Possession of Child Pornography.
Smith, 32, was sentenced to 10 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. Following his release, he will be required to serve an additional 10 years of sex offender probation.
The case against Smith began in February 2024, when detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a tip regarding the potential possession and distribution of illegal material.
During the subsequent probe, investigators secured a search warrant for Smith’s online accounts. According to the Sheriff’s Office, that digital search uncovered 20 files containing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).

When detectives attempted to interview Smith at his Spring Hill residence in March 2024, family members informed them that he had recently moved to North Carolina. Investigators then contacted Smith by phone, during which he reportedly verified that he was the owner of the accounts containing the illicit files.
Following the call, Hernando detectives coordinated with the Kernersville Police Department in North Carolina.
Local authorities there executed the arrest warrant, taking Smith into custody without bond on the original charges, which included 20 counts of possession and unlawful use of a two-way communication device.
Smith was subsequently extradited back to Florida to face the charges, resulting in Thursday’s guilty adjudication and sentencing.
