The Tampa Bay area is waking up to a sharp chill this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 50s and wind chills dipping into the 20s. It is a chilly reminder that winter, however brief, still pays visits to Florida.

The holiday forecast calls for plenty of sunshine, but don’t let the bright skies fool you. Highs will barely scrape 58 degrees, and a north wind of 7 to 9 mph will keep things feeling brisk. If you are heading out for parades or service events, layers are non-negotiable.

The cold snap intensifies after the sun goes down. Tonight looks to be the coldest stretch of the week. Skies will remain clear, allowing heat to escape and driving temperatures down to a low of around 34 degrees. Patchy frost is expected to develop after 1 a.m., so sensitive plants should be covered or brought inside.

The Thaw Begins Tuesday

You will likely need the ice scraper again Tuesday morning. Patchy frost is expected to linger until about 9 a.m., with wind chill values again sitting in the upper 20s. However, the recovery begins shortly after. Tuesday will see full sun and a high near 64, significantly more comfortable than the holiday chill.

By Wednesday, the region takes a hard turn back toward typical Florida warmth. Winds shifting to the east-northeast will help push temperatures to a pleasant 75 degrees under partly sunny skies.

Looking Ahead: Rain and a Warm Weekend

The rapid warm-up brings some instability later in the week. Thursday introduces a 30 percent chance of showers, mostly in the afternoon, with cloud cover keeping the high near 73.

Once the rain clears Thursday night, the weekend is shaping up to be mild and mostly bright. Friday and Saturday look nearly identical: mostly sunny skies and highs hovering in the upper 70s—a nearly 20-degree jump from the start of the week. Sunday may see a slight cool-down to 73 with a slim chance of rain, but the freezing temperatures will be long gone.
