‘Fundamental Disagreement’: European Troops Rush To Greenland As Trump Eyes Takeover

European nations, including France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, are deploying troops to Greenland to bolster the Arctic island’s security, a direct response to intensifying pressure from Washington regarding a potential acquisition of the territory.

The mobilization follows high-stakes talks between officials from Denmark, Greenland, and the United States that ended in a deadlock. Negotiators revealed a “fundamental disagreement” over President Donald Trump’s stated ambition to acquire Greenland, a move he argues is necessary to secure American interests.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the military support Wednesday. “The first French military elements are already en route,” Macron said, adding that “others will follow.”

The diplomatic rift centers on conflicting views of the island’s future. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed that the talks clarified Trump’s wish to “conquer over Greenland.” Rasmussen firmly rejected both a military takeover and any purchase agreement, drawing a firm boundary on Danish sovereignty.

President Trump has maintained that the US requires the island to counter growing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic and to access its untapped mineral wealth. “We really need it,” Trump stated regarding the acquisition.

While rejecting the acquisition bid, Denmark announced it is stepping up its own military presence in the Arctic in coordination with its European allies. Officials have also established a working group with American counterparts to address specific security concerns, provided they respect Denmark’s “red lines.”
