Gag Reflex Politics: Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy Rips Looming DHS Shutdown As ‘Number 1 Stupid’

Senator John Kennedy took to the Senate floor Thursday to sound a sharp alarm over a funding stalemate that he claims is pushing the Department of Homeland Security toward a total operational freeze.

The Louisiana Republican rejected the idea that the current impasse is a standard fiscal debate, instead characterizing the situation as a calculated political play that puts essential services and payrolls at immediate risk.

“The Department of Homeland Security is about to shut down. We don’t know how to get back open. What does that mean? It means ICE will be shut down. We’ve got some ideas about how to keep it operating. They have enough money. It means TSA will be shut down. They’re not going to be paid. That’ll impact airport travel,” Kennedy stated during his floor remarks.

He further warned of the broader implications for national safety, noting, “Coast Guard will be shut down. FEMA. God help us if we have a natural disaster. It’ll be shut down. What’s about to happen is top of the list, king of the hill, a number one stupid. And it’s happening just not because of policy. It’s happening because of raw gut politics. If you could see what I see, your gag reflex would be permanently triggered.”

The tension centers on a spending bill that narrowly cleared the House of Representatives in January with a 220-207 vote. While that measure secured funding for DHS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it did so with the support of only seven Democrats.

The majority of the Democratic caucus has remained firm in its opposition, with many members demanding significant structural reforms to immigration enforcement—such as requiring judicial warrants for specific actions—before agreeing to release the funds.

“The Karen Wing of the Democratic Party is in control of the Democratic Party. And the Karen Wing of the Democratic Party, not all Democrats, but there’s clearly a Karen Wing. Sometimes I call them the Loon Wing. They have gone to Minority Leader Jeffries and my friend, Senator Schumer, and said, ‘Don’t you vote for that Homeland Security bill.’ Why? Because the Karen Wing of the Democratic Party wants to defund ICE,” Kennedy argued.

He compared the current rhetoric to previous calls for police reform, adding, “Now, we’ve seen this vampire movie before. The Karen Wing of the Democratic Party also wanted us to defund the police. How’d that work out for us? The criminals are still laughing. Now, they want to defund ICE.”

The legislative standoff comes as some progressive lawmakers have publicly advocated for abolishing ICE entirely. Dozens of other Democrats have signed on to a broader effort to withhold support for any appropriations bill that maintains the status quo for immigration enforcement without what they describe as “sweeping reforms.”

As the clock ticks toward a potential shutdown, the Senate remains divided on whether to advance the House-passed bill or seek a compromise that addresses the progressive wing’s demands for agency oversight.
