Garrity Demands Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro Cough Up $250 Driver Rebates This Summer

Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity, the Republican nominee for governor, is calling on Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro to fulfill a 2022 campaign promise by giving drivers a $250 rebate.

Garrity went a step further, urging Shapiro to issue the $250 checks every month during the three-month summer driving season.

The political clash stems from a proposal Shapiro made during his 2022 run for office. At the time, Shapiro called for a $250 rebate per personal passenger vehicle, capped at four vehicles per household. The original plan was meant to be funded by federal stimulus money.

Garrity claims the governor failed to follow through on that commitment.

“I realize Josh Shapiro wants to politicize higher gas prices and use them as a political weapon, but the people of Pennsylvania should never be used as Josh Shapiro’s pawn to score political points,” Garrity said. “Pennsylvania deserves more from our Governor, and we definitely deserve a Governor who follows through on his most basic campaign promises. Time and again, Josh Shapiro has shown that he is more concerned with his dreams of living on Pennsylvania Avenue than helping hardworking Pennsylvania families achieve theirs. It’s time he follows through on his four-year-old campaign promise and delivers for the people he represents. Rest assured, next year, I will.”

Garrity released her own version of the rebate plan as part of her gubernatorial platform. Under the Garrity Plan, Pennsylvania residents would qualify for the money if they have a valid state driver’s license and can prove they are a United States citizen.

The payments would be sent out via direct deposit during June, July, and August. Instead of using federal stimulus cash, Garrity stated she would fund the program by using the state’s excess budget surpluses.
