A 20-year-old Georgia man was arrested on Aug. 7, 2026, for allegedly stealing more than $22,000 from a Florida resident in an impersonation scheme, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Thomas Kelly Pullen of Savannah faces charges of grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Authorities stated that the victim, a resident of Marathon, Florida, reported receiving multiple phone calls in May 2026 from individuals claiming to represent the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The callers told the victim he had missed jury duty and had to pay a fee to avoid arrest.
Following the callers’ instructions, the victim agreed to hand over $22,450 in cash to an unknown man posing as an undercover law enforcement officer. The exchange took place in a grocery store parking lot in Marathon.
Later that same day, the victim received a follow-up phone call demanding an additional $31,500. Suspecting fraud, the victim contacted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident.
Detectives launched an investigation, during which the victim identified Pullen as the suspect who collected the money. Pullen was subsequently taken into custody on Aug. 7.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office noted that the investigation remains active, and additional charges or arrests by Monroe County and other law enforcement agencies may be pending.
