PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A construction zone on the Howard Frankland Bridge turned into a chaotic scene Sunday night when a pickup truck swerved into a closed lane, killing the driver and sending three workers to the hospital.

The crash occurred just before 10 p.m. on southbound I-275 near milepost 34. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 37-year-old man from Musella, Georgia, was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Silverado when he failed to yield to the active work zone.

Troopers say the Silverado breached the closed lane and slammed directly into a parked Ford F550 belonging to Archer Western-Traylor Brothers JV. The collision was violent enough to spray debris across the interstate, striking a passing Nissan Titan driven by an 18-year-old from Largo.

The Georgia man driving the Silverado sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Inside the work truck, a 45-year-old Tampa man and two other construction workers were injured during the impact. Emergency crews transported all three to a nearby area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The teen driver of the Nissan was reportedly unharmed.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
