In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) unleashed a blistering critique of the ongoing government shutdown, labeling the crisis a “you-know-what measuring contest between the men in leadership.”
The Georgia Republican, known for her outspoken nature, blamed both Republicans and Democrats for the political gridlock while simultaneously attacking the leadership within her own party.
Greene voiced her deep frustration with the “standstill” between the two chambers, lamenting that the government remains unfunded almost two months after the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR).
She argued that while Democrats could vote for the CR to reopen the government, Republicans in the Senate have the power to “use the nuclear option” to override the filibuster and end the shutdown immediately.
The Shutdown’s Human Toll
Beyond the procedural politics, Greene emphasized the detrimental impact the shutdown is having on everyday Americans, calling the situation “incredibly embarrassing.” She detailed the mounting anxieties over critical services, pointing to:
- Travel Chaos: Anticipated “chaos” and flight delays affecting major hubs like Atlanta.
- Essential Benefits: The halt of SNAP benefits for millions of recipients.
- Unpaid Workers: Federal workers, including Capitol Police who provide security, are not receiving paychecks.
- Affordability Crisis: She disputed President Biden’s claims of low inflation, insisting that grocery prices and energy bills remain “higher than they were a year ago” for her constituents.
Direct Challenge to Speaker Johnson
The interview took a turn when Collins asked Greene about her earlier comments criticizing “weak Republican men in Congress.”
Greene aimed her most substantial criticism at House Speaker Mike Johnson for “forcing Congress to stay home” while Americans struggle.
She publicly demanded that Speaker Johnson bring the House back into session to not only reopen the government but also to finally address the crisis of “absolutely unaffordable” healthcare in the country.
When asked if Johnson was fighting as hard for the GOP as former Speaker Nancy Pelosi fought for Democrats, Greene offered a compliment.
“I respect her greatly because she accomplished more for her party than I’ve seen our speaker accomplish for hours,” Greene stated, drawing a stark, unfavorable comparison between her party’s current and past leadership.
