“Senate Out of Control!”: Greene Blasts Thune’s Leadership

In a fiery social media broadside Friday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) launched a scathing attack on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), accusing him of “weak” leadership and allowing “unelected” officials to undermine Republican priorities.

Greene’s ire was sparked by a recent unfavorable ruling from the Senate parliamentarian on Medicaid provisions in the GOP’s “tax megabill” and the planned vote on a war powers resolution later in the day.

Greene, a vocal critic of President Trump’s strikes on Iran, lambasted Thune for not moving to fire the Senate parliamentarian after a Thursday ruling that seemingly stripped “MAGA provisions” from the party’s flagship legislation.

“The Senate is out of control!!” Greene exclaimed. “How is Thune allowing this War Powers Resolution, a referendum against President Trump, tonight at 6 pm??? And Thune is allowing the Senate Parliamentarian (appointed by Harry Reid) to strip out all the MAGA provisions in the bill!!”

Comparing the parliamentarian to other “unelected” figures like federal judges and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, Greene demanded decisive action from Thune. “Thune needs to over rule her or FIRE HER!!!” she asserted. “We need leaders with courage not weak men who refuse to use their power in order to do the right thing!!!”

The parliamentarian’s rulings are particularly significant for the Republican “tax megabill,” which is being pushed through the Senate using the budget reconciliation process. This allows the bill to pass with a simple majority, bypassing the typical 60-vote threshold often required to overcome a filibuster.

However, the parliamentarian’s role is to ensure that provisions within such bills adhere strictly to budgetary rules, often leading to the removal of policy-focused measures. Senate leaders, including Thune, have largely indicated they will not overrule the parliamentarian, citing the desire to preserve Senate norms and avoid setting a precedent that could undermine the filibuster.

Beyond the tax bill, Greene also focused on the impending vote on a war powers resolution, authored by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.). This resolution aims to prevent President Trump from taking further military action against Iran without congressional approval.

While Thune has limited power to block such a privileged resolution from coming to the floor, he does control its timing. The vote is widely anticipated to fall along party lines, especially as President Trump endeavors to maintain a recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

The Georgia representative’s strong condemnation highlights a growing divide within the Republican party, as some conservative members push for more aggressive tactics and a greater challenge to established Senate procedures.

As the Senate prepares for a contentious vote on the war powers resolution, all eyes will be on whether Greene’s fiery rhetoric can sway any senators to her side or if Thune’s pragmatic approach to Senate rules will prevail.
