ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A 15-year-old freshman at Gibbs High School was arrested after school officials discovered he had a handgun concealed in his clothing, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The ninth-grader faces felony charges of possession of a weapon on school property and unlawful carry of a concealed firearm.
Authorities said the incident began when a school staff member alerted the campus School Resource Officer that a student appeared to be hiding a gun in his clothes. Investigators looked into the tip and quickly took the teenager into custody.
Police noted that the student had not made any threats toward classmates, staff, or the school prior to his arrest.
“The St. Petersburg Police makes the safety of students a top priority and any weapon on campus, or other threat to school safety, will be thoroughly investigated,” the department said in a statement. “This serves as a reminder to students that this is taken very seriously and the consequences could be severe.”
Police have not released the teenager’s identity due to his age.
