President Donald Trump delivered an hour-long speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, taking aim at members of the media, political opponents, and members of his own cabinet.
Speaking at the Waldorf Astoria to an audience composed largely of journalists, Trump directed specific insults toward prominent press figures. He singled out CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, demanding that she smile more, and referred to anchor Jake Tapper as “Fake Tapper.”
He also targeted reporters from the Wall Street Journal during his remarks.
Throughout the address, the president offered sharp critiques of political foes and media organizations. Asserting his role in the current news landscape, Trump told the assembled press corps, “When I’m gone, you’re all going to be broke. There’s not going to be anybody to report on.”
The speech touched on several other subjects, including the progress of his White House ballroom construction project and the mental fitness of President Joe Biden. Trump also joked about Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., quipping that Kennedy “personally ran over the cow” served for the evening’s meal.
Critics characterized the president’s address as “rambling, unhinged,” and “full of hate.”
The event marked a rare appearance by Trump at the annual dinner, which had been postponed from its original date following a security incident earlier in the year.
