For anglers along Florida’s Gulf Coast, this weekend offers a classic “good news, bad news” scenario. The good news: A calm, fishable weather window has opened up for Friday and Saturday. The bad news: It slams shut on Sunday.

According to marine forecasts from the Panhandle to Southwest Florida, seas are subsiding rapidly following the mid-week chill, offering light winds and manageable seas through Saturday evening. However, a reinforcing cold front is barreling toward the coast, with gale-force gusts and seas building to 8-10 feet expected by Sunday morning.

The message from captains is clear: If you want to fish, go now.

Inshore: Negative Tides and Pothole Strategies The recent cold snaps have plunged water temperatures, pushing fish into winter patterns. Across Tampa Bay and the Nature Coast, extreme “negative low tides” are concentrating fish in deeper pockets of water.

Because the water is cold, fish are lethargic. Anglers should slow down their presentations. A live shrimp rigged on a light jig head or a slow-twitched soft plastic worked across the bottom of a pothole is the most effective tactic right now.

The “Convict Fish” Bite is On The most reliable bite across the entire coast—from Destin to Naples—is the sheepshead. As spawning season ramps up, these striped bandits are aggressively feeding around bridge pilings, residential docks, and nearshore rock piles.

Captains report excellent sheepshead action using fiddler crabs, sand fleas, or small pieces of shrimp. This is often the “trip saver” for anglers when other species have lockjaw due to the cold.

Nearshore and Offshore: Hogfish and Red Grouper For those heading out to the nearshore reefs (30-60 feet of water) on Saturday, hogfish remains the top target. Reports out of Clearwater and Sarasota indicate hogfish are biting, though they can be timid. Lighter tackle and live shrimp or sand fleas are yielding the best results.

Further offshore, beyond the 90-foot mark, red grouper are providing steady action for boats making the longer run. Anglers in the Panhandle are also reporting a solid bite for scamp and catch-and-release red snapper on the reefs, though the window to reach them is short.

Panhandle Update In Northwest Florida, the bite has been defined by “bluebird” days between fronts. Night fishing at the Three Mile Bridge has produced bull redfish, while daylight hours are seeing sheepshead numbers improve around heavy structure.
