President Donald Trump took the stage at Mount Rushmore just after 11 p.m. ET on the eve of the United States’ semiquincentennial. In a 30-minute address leading into the July 4th celebrations, he focused heavily on national identity, upcoming elections, and foreign policy.
“Tonight we gather on the eve of one of the most extraordinary days in the history of the world,” Trump stated as he began. “Tomorrow we mark 250 years of glorious independence and 250 years of majestic American freedom. Nothing like it.” He praised the country’s global standing, adding, “By the grace of God, the United States of America is the most successful, most accomplished, most exceptional nation ever to exist in human history, and it is great to be your president.”
A significant portion of the address focused on the preservation of American heritage and character.
Trump argued that the nation’s liberty has endured “because of the culture and character of the people who declared it, defended it and preserved it,” calling the transmission of those traits “the core of patriotic duty of every American.”
He countered what he described as recent efforts to “beat the American spirit out of us, alienate us from our history, and to make it impossible to even answer the question, ‘What does it mean to be an American?'” Addressing the crowd, he declared, “we’re going to give our country its identity back. Above all, Americans love freedom.” He added that while citizens do not have to be born in the U.S., “you must love our country.”
Trump then shifted his focus to political opponents, labeling multiple Democrats running in the 2026 elections as communists. “There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country, who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success,” he said. He characterized communism as “a mortal threat to American liberty,” the “enemy of the Constitution,” and the “enemy of July 4, 1776.”
He called on the audience to resolve “that the citizens of the United States of America will vanquish communism quickly,” advising them, “Don’t let them take too much of your time.”
Looking toward the upcoming November midterms, Trump stated that Republicans could only lose “if we allow ourselves to lose the midterms” by failing to end the Senate filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act. He claimed that if Congress successfully executes those two actions, “then we will not lose an election for 100 years.”
Before concluding, Trump briefly addressed the ongoing conflict with Iran. “They’re dying to settle. They want to settle so badly,” he remarked. “We gave him a week off for a funeral because we’re nice.”
He ended his remarks by looking forward to the Independence Day events. “Tomorrow, we reach a milestone like no other and celebrate with hearts and soaring spirits,” Trump said, “because after two and a half centuries, we know that this is not an ending; this is only the beginning of the golden age of America.”
