GOP Civil War Explodes: Florida Reps Demand Senate ‘Nuke’ Rules To Pass ‘SAVE America Act’

The thin veneer of Republican unity cracked wide open this week as a high-stakes power struggle between the House and Senate moved from behind closed doors to a very public, very heated confrontation on social media.

The spark for the latest firestorm is the SAVE America Act, a piece of legislation that would require proof of U.S. citizenship, like a birth certificate or passport, for anyone registering to vote in federal elections.

While the House cleared the bill months ago, it has hit a wall in the Senate, leading frustrated House conservatives to turn their fire on their own party leaders.

Representative Greg Steube, a Florida Republican, went on the attack Monday with a blunt post on X directed at Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Steube didn’t hold back, demanding that the Senate leadership take the nuclear option to get the bill across the finish line.

“The House passed the SAVE America Act over 2 months ago,” Steube wrote. “@LeaderJohnThune, nuke the filibuster and get it done! Seems pretty easy to everyone but the RINOs in the Senate…”

The term “nuke the filibuster” refers to a massive procedural shift that would allow the bill to pass with a simple majority of 51 votes rather than the 60-vote threshold currently required to bypass a Democratic filibuster.

Despite holding a majority, Senate Republicans are nowhere near the 60-vote mark, and Democrats have remained a solid wall of opposition, calling the bill an attempt to disenfranchise voters.

The pressure isn’t just coming from the House. President Donald Trump has made the SAVE America Act a cornerstone of his legislative agenda ahead of the midterm elections. The President has even suggested he might block other key pieces of legislation until this bill lands on his desk, urging Senate Republicans to either kill the filibuster or force a “talking filibuster” to break the stalemate.

However, Senator Thune is holding his ground, citing the cold reality of Senate math. Thune has repeatedly argued that he simply doesn’t have the votes within his own caucus to blow up the chamber’s rules. He has also warned that destroying the filibuster now could leave Republicans defenseless if the political tides turn and Democrats regain control in the future.

The internal finger-pointing only intensified as the week began. Representative Anna Paulina Luna, another Florida Republican, joined the fray on Monday with an equally sharp post. “Just so America knows, after two weeks in recess, John Thune is no longer considering the SAVE America Act,” Luna told her followers.

This public fracturing highlights a fundamental divide in the GOP: a House caucus pushing for aggressive, immediate results and a Senate leadership bound by institutional traditions and a razor-thin margin of error.

With the election season fast approaching, the public bickering raises serious questions about whether the party can bridge this gap or if the internal friction will stall their legislative momentum entirely.
