GOP Civil War In Kentucky: Colorado Rep. Boebert Defies Trump To Back Massie In Primary

Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert formally endorsed fellow Republican Representative Thomas Massie on Friday, breaking ranks with President Donald Trump just four days before Kentucky’s high-stakes primary election.

The endorsement comes amid an aggressive campaign by Trump to unseat Massie. Trump has thrown his support behind Massie’s primary opponent, Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, and has repeatedly targeted the incumbent congressman over his legislative record and foreign policy stances.

Boebert announced her decision on X, explicitly backing Massie while simultaneously maintaining her support for Trump.

“Below is my friend Thomas Massie. He loves America and is fighting to save it,” Boebert wrote. “Also below is my friend and President, Donald Trump. He’s put his life on the line to save this great country. I support both of these men. I’ve worked with both to preserve freedom and liberty. And if that makes you angry, bless your heart.”

The political rift between Trump and Massie stems from several high-profile policy disagreements. In June 2025, Massie voted against a major federal spending package—frequently referred to by Trump as the “big, beautiful bill”—citing concerns over its impact on the national debt.

Massie also opposed Trump’s June 2025 military strikes against Iran, labeling them unconstitutional. More recently, on May 4, Massie publicly criticized the ongoing conflict in Iran, stating that Israel “forced our hand and dragged us” into the war.

Trump has escalated his rhetoric against Massie in recent months. During an April campaign rally in Hebron, Kentucky, Trump called Massie a “complete and total disaster.” Later, at the National Prayer Breakfast, Trump referred to the Kentucky congressman as a “moron” while Massie was leading a discharge petition to force the release of government files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Boebert previously aligned with Massie on the Epstein files, joining him and Democratic California Representative Ro Khanna in signing the discharge petition. Despite direct pressure from Trump to withdraw her support, Boebert left her signature on the document.

Massie’s voting record has placed him at odds with the broader House Republican conference on multiple fronts. In February, he was one of just three Republicans who voted to lift the blockade on challenging Trump’s trade tariffs.

He was also the sole Republican to vote against the rule for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, arguing that it suspended House rules by allowing spending bills to reach the floor without a single day’s notice, though he noted he would support the final legislation during the floor vote.
