Republican infighting on Capitol Hill has escalated into a high-profile public dispute, as South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace is set to introduce a resolution today to censure her Florida GOP colleague, Rep. Cory Mills.
Mace’s resolution is also expected to seek the removal of Mills from his seats on the prestigious House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees. According to a source familiar with the matter, the resolution will be deemed “privileged,” forcing House GOP leadership to hold a vote on the measure by Friday.
Rep. Mace confirmed her intent earlier today, sending a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson requesting Mills’ removal from his committee assignments.
The escalating dispute follows a complex procedural battle this week involving censure resolutions targeting members of both parties.
On Tuesday, House Democrats introduced a retaliatory censure measure against Mills. This came in response to a Republican-led effort to formally rebuke Democratic U.S. Virgin Islands delegate Stacey Plaskett over her alleged consultation with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during a 2019 congressional hearing. Democrats ultimately withdrew their resolution after Republicans failed to secure the necessary votes to censure Plaskett and remove her from the House Intelligence Committee.
The failure of the Plaskett censure vote ignited fury among Mace and a faction of conservative Republicans, who publicly accused their conference of making a backroom deal to save Plaskett in exchange for preventing a vote on censuring Mills.
“Another backroom deal so Cory Mills can’t get censored for Stolen Valor,” Mace wrote on X Tuesday . “This. Is. Washington.” Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also weighed in on X, suggesting Mills should not seek reelection.
Mace’s resolution against Mills is reportedly expected to detail various allegations, including those related to domestic violence and “stolen valor,” stemming from Mace’s previous public comments about the Congressman.
Rep. Mills has consistently and strongly denied all instances of alleged impropriety.
