GOP Lawmakers: Guns, Gunmakers And Gun Workers Qualify As ‘Infrastructure’

For two months now, the Biden administration has tried to play David Copperfield with its $2 trillion “infrastructure” program.

Nearly 40 years ago, the renowned magician wowed a live TV audience by making the Statue of Liberty “disappear” on live TV.

Likewise, Biden would make more than $1.8 trillion disappear with a sleight of mouth that argues things like retrofitted homes, daycares, and electrical vehicle charging stations are “infrastructure.”

As Fortune magazine recently pointed out, under Biden’s plan, “construction or improvement of bridges, highways, roads, ports, waterways, and airports accounts for only $157 billion, or 7%, of the plan’s estimated cost.”

Congressional Republicans also have tweaked the definition of “infrastructure.”

Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Washington Republican, this week introduced the ‘‘Second Amendment is Essential Act of 2021.

Under Newhouse’s bill, the Homeland Security secretary “shall designate the business of importing, manufacturing, or dealing firearms, or importing or manufacturing ammunition” as “critical” infrastructure, in accordance with the Patriot Act.

Moreover, people employed in the firearms and munitions industries would also be declared “critical infrastructure” workers under federal law.

“It is always unconstitutional for government to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners, but to do so in the midst of a crisis is especially unconscionable,” Newhouse said in a statement.

“By denying Federal Firearms Licensees the ability to operate under ‘essential worker’ designations, Governors across the country have not only infringed on the Second Amendment rights of Americans but have recklessly tied the hands of our law enforcement officers who require access to these tools to ensure the safety of our communities.”

“This legislation protects law-abiding citizens’ ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights and prevents future anti-gun restrictions that restrict lawful access to firearms in times of emergency,” he added.

The bill has 28 GOP co-sponsors, including from Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach and Scott Franklin of Lakeland.

In his weekly newsletter, Gaetz said, “Time and time again, the Left disregards our right to bear arms, which is a sacred one, enshrined by our Founding Fathers in the Bill of Rights. For too long, the federal government has steadily chipped away at this right, making responsible gun ownership a complicated process of paperwork and government intrusion. These burdensome rules have resulted in the unfair treatment of many citizens.”

“This legislation,” Gaetz added, “would ensure that Americans can freely enjoy their Second Amendment rights at all times; including when they need it the most.”
