GOP Primary Friction: Could The Battle For Texas Give Democrats An Opening?

Veteran political analyst Brit Hume issued a warning this week regarding the shifting landscape of Texas politics, suggesting that the upcoming Republican primary results could dictate whether Democrats finally have a shot at flipping the state. Speaking on Fox News’ “Special Report” with host Bret Baier, Hume noted that while Texas remains a Republican stronghold, the potential nomination of a high-profile, controversial figure like Attorney General Ken Paxton might create an unexpected vulnerability for the GOP in a general election.

Current polling shows Paxton leading the pack in a three-way primary race, comfortably ahead of longtime incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

Despite his popularity with the MAGA wing of the party and his alignment with Donald Trump’s base, Paxton carries a significant amount of political baggage that Hume believes could be a goldmine for Democratic strategists. Over the last few years, Paxton has faced both a state impeachment trial and a federal investigation.

Although he was acquitted by the Texas Senate in 2023 and the Department of Justice recently declined to prosecute him on separate abuse-of-office allegations, the headlines surrounding those events remain a point of contention.

Hume argued that while Cornyn likely represents the safest bet for Republicans to hold the seat in a statewide general election, the Senator’s struggle to gain traction with primary voters is a growing concern for party leadership.

Cornyn has consistently trailed Paxton in recent surveys, reflecting a broader national trend where traditional incumbents face uphill battles against more populist challengers. Hume pointed out that if Paxton secures the nomination, Democrats—who have long dreamed of “Turning Texas Blue”—would have a much easier time framing the race around the Attorney General’s legal history rather than policy alone.

On the other side of the aisle, the name James Talarico has entered the conversation. Hume described Talarico as an articulate and promising candidate who could capitalize on any Republican infighting. While Texas has not elected a Democrat to a statewide office in decades, the margin of victory for Republicans has tightened in several recent cycles.

Baier noted during the discussion that Democrats have viewed Texas as their “holy grail” for years, and Hume admitted that under the right circumstances—specifically a fractured or weakened Republican ticket—the state could eventually shift. For now, the focus remains on the GOP primary, where voters must decide between an established incumbent and a lightning-rod frontrunner.
