A group of Republican senators introduced legislation on Tuesday to amend the federal charter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, seeking to restrict the organization’s membership exclusively to biological females.
The bill, titled the Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act, was introduced by Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). The Senate measure follows a companion bill introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this month by Rep. Ben Cline (R-Va.).
The legislative action comes after the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution adopted a non-discrimination clause allowing biological males who identify as women to become members.
If passed, the legislation would amend Title 36 of the United States Code, which governs the group’s federal charter, by establishing explicit biological criteria for eligibility. The text defines a “woman” as an adult human female and further defines “female” as a person who naturally possesses, or would possess absent a congenital anomaly or medical disruption, a reproductive system that produces ova for fertilization.
Sponsors of the bill argued that the DAR’s current membership criteria depart from the group’s original purpose.
“The Daughters of the American Revolution was founded by women for women, and its founders would be appalled that the organization is now allowing biological males to become members and undermine the legacy of real women who helped build our nation,” Blackburn said in a statement. “The Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act would amend the DAR’s federal charter to stop the organization from erasing biological reality and ensure it is reserved for the real daughters of the American Revolution.”
Britt raised similar concerns about the organization’s historic scope.
“The Daughters of the American Revolution are called ‘Daughters’ for a reason—this organization is meant to honor the legacy of American women and their ancestors, not pander to a distorted sense of reality manufactured by far-left radical Democrats,” Britt said. “Whether in women’s locker rooms or time-honored organizations like DAR, it is our job to protect women and girls in spaces that are rightfully theirs.”
Lee pointed to the founding history of the organization and the existence of parallel groups for men. “Congress created this group in 1890 to recognize the American women preserving our history, but their D.C. chapter is now admitting biological men,” Lee said. “The woke invasion of every feminine space has to stop – there’s already a group for Sons of the American Revolution! Our bill will reverse this needless policy to give the women who built this organization the protection and legitimacy they deserve.”
Tuberville highlighted the reaction among local chapters in his home state. “There’s a reason the founders of this group named it the DAUGHTERS of the American Revolution,” Tuberville said. “They had the common sense to recognize what a woman is; unlike the woke Left that apparently doesn’t understand the differences between female and male anatomy. Alabama has over 4,000 members in the DAR, and they shouldn’t have to be putting up with this woke nonsense.”
