GOP Struggles To Keep Spark Alive As Energy Costs Fuel Voter Backlash 6-Months From Midterms

With the 2026 midterm elections just six months away, the Republican party is facing a sharpening uphill climb as the political environment shifts against the current leadership.

New data from Morning Consult reveals that the Republican trifecta is currently operating in a fragile domestic environment where voter sentiment is cooling.

Historically, the party holding the White House loses an average of 25 House seats during midterms, and current polling suggests 2026 is trending toward that pattern rather than the rare exceptions seen in past decades.

The most immediate pressure point for the electorate is the cost of living, particularly regarding energy. While Republicans typically lean on economic messaging, they are losing ground on core pocketbook issues, with public trust in Democrats to handle energy policy now sitting six points higher than trust in the GOP.

This shift comes as voters express growing frustration over utility bills, with blame directed at AI data centers for rising electricity costs jumping 14 points in the last six months—the fastest-growing grievance in the Morning Consult tracker.

President Trump’s personal standing has also taken a hit, with his national net approval rating dipping to -9. Currently, he holds a positive approval rating in only 17 states, a notable decrease from the 22 states where he was above water at the end of last year.

This slide is reflected in the generic congressional ballot, where Democrats currently hold a 3-point lead. While this margin is slightly behind the pace Democrats set during the 2018 cycle, it remains well within the historical range that suggests a potential flip of the House of Representatives.

Beyond energy, health care remains a dominant concern for the American public. Democrats maintain a significant 11-point advantage on health care trust, which ranks as the second-highest priority for voters overall.

Perhaps most telling is a growing desire for a legislative check and balance on the executive branch. A majority of voters—57%—now say they want Congress to provide a check on the administration’s tariff and trade policies, marking the highest level of opposition to the trade agenda recorded by the tracker to date.

Business leaders and energy-sector stakeholders are being advised to prepare for a volatile few months as the campaign season heats up.

As Republicans face a delivery gap on lowering costs and ongoing tensions in Iran threaten to spike fuel prices, analysts expect politicians on the right to shift blame toward external factors and corporate interests.

With roughly 36 competitive House seats in play, the combination of high energy costs and a public desire for oversight has put the Republican majority on the defensive heading into the summer primaries.
