Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed four distinguished individuals to Florida’s Advisory Commission for America’s Semiquincentennial, marking a significant step in the state’s preparations to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence in 2026. Lieutenant Governor Jeanette M. Nuñez will chair the commission, serving as a liaison to the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.
The newly formed commission will work in conjunction with the Florida Department of State to develop recommendations for commemorating this historic milestone. Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of celebrating the nation’s founding virtues and achievements.

“Nearly 250 years ago, our country was founded on the righteous virtues of life, liberty, and self-determination, and America remains a light to the world,” said Governor DeSantis. “We have a responsibility to celebrate this monumental achievement in human history, to remember the founding fathers who made it happen, and to give thanks for the great accomplishments of the republic over these 250 years. God Bless the USA!”
Lieutenant Governor Nuñez echoed the governor’s sentiments, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the commission. “I’m humbled to have been selected by Governor Ron DeSantis to serve as the Chair of the advisory commission,” she said. “I look forward to working with the Florida Department of State and the Commission to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. This momentous occasion will honor the history of our great nation, the American spirit, and our cherished values.”
The four appointees bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the commission, ensuring a thoughtful and comprehensive celebration of America’s founding.
- Representative Patt Maney: A veteran, retired judge, and state representative, Maney has dedicated his life to public service. With over 36 years of military service and a distinguished career in law and education, Maney’s leadership will be invaluable to the commission.
- Jacqueline Gay Gaines: A prominent figure in historic preservation, Gaines served as Regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, overseeing the restoration of George Washington’s estate. Her philanthropic work and dedication to patriotic causes make her a fitting addition to the commission.
- Dr. Lucas Morel: A renowned scholar and professor of politics at Washington and Lee University, Dr. Morel is an expert on American political thought and history. His extensive work on Abraham Lincoln and the founding era will provide critical insights for the commission’s efforts.
- Dr. Matthew Spalding: A constitutional scholar and dean of Hillsdale College’s Van Andel Graduate School of Government, Dr. Spalding is a leading voice on the principles of American self-government. His academic and professional background will help guide the commission’s focus on the nation’s founding ideals.
Secretary of State Cord Byrd praised the governor’s selections, emphasizing the importance of honoring America’s history and values. “This is a significant milestone of American independence, and I look forward to working with the Commission as it plans a celebration centered on America’s hard-fought freedom and the Founding Fathers’ enduring vision of our republican form of government,” Byrd said.

The commission’s work will build on the foundation laid by Executive Order 24-267, signed by Governor DeSantis on December 6, 2024, which established the commission and directed the Florida Department of State to collaborate with the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.
