Gov. DeSantis Vows Stiff Resistance to Biden’s Supposed Travel Restrictions on Florida

Few things better demonstrate the weird woke philosophy that now governs America’s political and corporate culture than this: President Joe Biden pulled the plug on travel restrictions from troublesome, if not outright anti-American, hotspots overseas, yet he wants to impose them on Florida.

The McClatchy news service reported on Wednesday that a newer, tougher strain of the coronavirus first found in Britain has migrated to the U.S. And it’s becoming more prevalent in Florida.

The Biden administration’s answer: domestic travel restrictions imposed on Florida.

“This is a war and we’re at battle with the virus. War is messy and unpredictable, and all options are on the table,” some unnamed administration official told McClatchy.

Well, Gov. Ron DeSantis was not amused.

“The recent report that the Biden administration is considering restricting the travel of Floridians is completely absurd, especially when Biden allows illegal aliens to pour across our southern border,” DeSantis tweeted on Thursday.

“We won’t allow Floridians to be unfairly targeted for political purposes.”

In additional comments to reporters, DeSantis reiterated that tweet, labeling such restrictions as “absurd.”

“It would be unconstitutional, it would be unwise, and it would be unjust,” he added.

“Restricting the right of Americans to travel freely throughout our country, while allowing illegal aliens to pour across the southern border unmolested, would be a ridiculous, but very damaging, farce,” DeSantis said.

He called it a “political attack” on Florida.

Since Dec. 1, DeSantis added, Florida has outperformed more than half the country in tamping down new infections, hospitalizations and fatalities – despite having America’s second-largest percentage of the population most vulnerable to the virus.

In addition, Florida has vaccinated the most people 65 and older in the nation, said DeSantis.

“Any attempt to restrict or lock down Florida by the federal government,” said DeSantis, “would be an attack on our state, done purely for political purposes.”

“We will not back down, and if anyone tries to harm Floridians or target us, we will respond very swiftly, the governor added.

Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio struck a similar attitude, telling Fox News on Thursday, “I think it’s unconstitutional. I think it’s going to be challenged in court, successfully. But I think it also gives you some insight into what we’re dealing with here, hypocrites.”

After DeSantis stood firm, the White House appeared to back away.

“We are always considering what steps are necessary to keep the American people safe, but we are not currently in the process of, no decisions have been made around additional public health measures that would delay or would change, I should say, domestic travel considerations,” Biden spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters at a briefing.
