Government Shutdown Threat Spikes As Democrats Draw Line In Sand Over ICE

The chances of a partial federal government shutdown just got a lot higher. As the clock ticks toward a critical deadline, Senate Democrats are digging in their heels, promising to block a spending bill needed to keep the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) running.

The political standoff intensified just hours after a deadly shooting involving a federal officer in Minneapolis.

In the wake of the incident, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made the party’s position clear: Democrats will not provide the necessary 60 votes to advance the funding package if it includes the current measures for the DHS.

Schumer was direct in his reasoning, calling the current funding plan “woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Congress is now in a race against time. Lawmakers have until midnight on Friday to bridge the gap, or the government will go dark.
