TAMPA, Fla. – Tampa Bay residents should keep their rain gear close today as a messy weather pattern settles over the region before giving way to a significant warming trend. This afternoon carries a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms under cloudy skies with a high near 80 degrees. Southwest winds are expected to stay around 9 mph.

The National Weather Service indicates that the wettest stretch will likely hit tonight. Forecasters state there is a “chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 7pm and 1am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am.”

While the low will hover around 62 degrees, the chance of precipitation jumps to 70 percent, with “new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.”

Conditions will start to stabilize on Saturday, though the area isn’t entirely in the clear. There remains a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day. It will be partly sunny with a high near 77 degrees, featuring calm winds that will shift to the northwest at 6 mph in the afternoon. By Saturday night, the clouds will begin to break with a low of 57 degrees.

The second half of the weekend marks a total shift in the atmosphere. Sunday will be sunny with a high near 78 degrees and a light northeast wind. That clear trend continues into Sunday night, which is expected to be mostly clear with a low around 55 degrees.

Looking toward the work week, temperatures are set to climb steadily. Monday will be sunny with a high of 82 degrees, followed by an even warmer Tuesday reaching 83 degrees. Tuesday will also be breezier, with east winds between 6 to 13 mph and “gusts as high as 20 mph.”

By the middle of the week, the heat intensifies. Wednesday brings a high near 86 degrees with a slight 20 percent chance of rain. Thursday and Friday will see the mercury hit 87 degrees. While the sun will remain a fixture, the humidity returns late in the week, bringing a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms on Thursday and continued “chances of showers and thunderstorms” by Friday.
