A 19-year-old Kentucky man will spend at least the next two decades behind bars after receiving a life sentence for beating his grandmother to death inside her home.
On July 7, Wyatt Testerman was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years. The sentencing follows a May agreement where Testerman pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the murder of 74-year-old Cheri Oliver.
The incident occurred on October 8, 2024, when authorities responded to an active assault report at Oliver’s residence. A relative had contacted 911 to report that her nephew was out of control. Upon arrival, police discovered Oliver suffering from severe head trauma, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Testerman, who was 18 at the time, was arrested without incident.
Court proceedings revealed that Testerman was living with his grandmother after a recent hospital release for an LSD overdose. Family members noted that Oliver was initially pleased with the arrangement, as Testerman helped her with household errands and drove her to medical appointments.
However, Testerman and his defense team stated that he continued to abuse LSD and was suffering from a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the assault.
A central piece of evidence in the prosecution’s case was a video recorded during the attack. Prosecutors stated Testerman used Oliver’s cell phone to film himself beating her with a metal tumbler.
Commenting on the footage, Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders stated, “What he did to his grandmother was nothing short of animalistic.”
While the defense highlighted Testerman’s mental state, prosecutors maintained that a drug-induced psychosis does not legally support an insanity defense because the substance was consumed voluntarily.
During his sentencing hearing, Testerman addressed the court to apologize to his family.
“My grandma was one of the nicest, most caring people who ever walked the earth,” Testerman said. “I thought my sweet little grandma was a true danger. Now, I must live the rest of my life knowing that I ended her life in the most horrible and frightening way. Please allow me the opportunity to apologize from the bottom of my heart to my entire family.”
According to public records, Oliver was an active member of her community, volunteering at a local women’s shelter and participating in Al-Anon, a support organization for the families and friends of individuals struggling with substance abuse.
