Anglers across the Gulf Coast are prepping their tackle boxes as the recreational harvest for gray triggerfish officially reopens on March 1. This opening applies to both state and federal waters, giving local fishers the green light to head offshore after the winter hiatus.

According to officials, the spring season will run through May 31, followed by a mid-summer closure and a second opening from August 1 through December 31.

For those looking to keep their catch, the fish must meet a minimum size limit of 15 inches fork length, which is measured from the tip of the head to the center of the fork in the tail. The daily bag limit is strictly set at one fish per person.

Fishermen heading out on private recreational vessels are reminded of a specific paperwork requirement before they leave the dock. To participate in the harvest in state or federal waters, anglers must sign up as a State Reef Fish Angler. This designation requires an annual renewal.

For anyone needing a refresher on the rules or looking to stay compliant while on the water, authorities suggest a few digital resources.

“To learn more about current recreational triggerfish regulations, visit MyFWC.com/Marine, click ‘Recreational Regulations,’ ‘Reef Fish’ and ‘Triggerfish’ or download the Fish Rules App,” the agency stated. Registration for the State Reef Fish Survey can be completed at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.
