A federal judge has handed down a prison sentence to a Guatemalan man following a violent confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in South Florida last summer. Fredy Aureliano Morales-Ramirez will serve one year and one day in federal prison, a term that marks the end of a legal saga involving a chaotic arrest that left two federal agents injured.

The incident dates back to August 2025 in Lake Worth Beach. ICE officers were attempting to execute a targeted enforcement operation to take Morales-Ramirez into custody, as he was already subject to a final order of removal from the country.

What was intended to be a routine arrest quickly devolved into a physical struggle. According to court records and Department of Homeland Security reports, Morales-Ramirez resisted the officers’ attempts to restrain him. During the melee, he reportedly tried to seize the officers’ handcuffs, physically assaulted one officer in the groin, and attempted to choke another.

Local police eventually arrived on the scene to assist federal agents in gaining control of the situation. While the officers involved were able to complete the arrest, they did not walk away unscathed, reporting various cuts and bruises sustained during the struggle. Morales-Ramirez subsequently pleaded guilty to charges of forcibly assaulting a federal officer, a felony under U.S. law.

The sentencing comes amid a period of heightened tension regarding the safety of law enforcement personnel in the field. Department officials have pointed to a sharp rise in aggressive encounters, citing internal data that suggests a significant uptick in assaults and threats against federal agents over the last year.

“This illegal alien not only violated our laws by coming to our country illegally but then chose to violently assault our law enforcement including by grabbing an officer by the genitals and attempting to choke an officer. Assaulting federal law enforcement is a felony and a federal crime. These are the dangerous situations our officers find themselves in every day in the field,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “As a direct result of sanctuary politicians encouraging illegal aliens to evade arrest, our officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them, a 3,200% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats against them. Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

For Morales-Ramirez, the prison sentence is only the first step in his legal exit from the United States. Once he completes his time in federal custody, he is expected to be turned back over to immigration authorities for formal removal to Guatemala.
