A coalition of major Second Amendment organizations has filed a new federal lawsuit in California challenging Assembly Bill 1127, recently signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, which bans the sale of popular Glock pistols in the state.

The legal action, known as Jaymes v. Bonta, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California on Monday.

The lawsuit was brought by the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), the National Rifle Association (NRA), and the Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC), along with a firearms retailer and two private citizens.

CCRKBA Hails New Legal Challenge

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), a sister organization to the SAF, quickly hailed the new legal action. While not a plaintiff in Jaymes v. Bonta, the CCRKBA stated it is watching the case closely.

“The court has already held that several provisions of the Unsafe Handgun Act (UHA) likely violate the Second Amendment,” noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “But instead of taking a hint from the court, Gov. Newsom has doubled down… by signing this new legislation. This new ban is flagrantly unconstitutional, and Newsom must know it.”

The CCRKBA was a key party in an earlier lawsuit, Renna v. Bonta, filed in November 2020, which challenged California’s UHA.

A ‘Game’ Against the Constitution?

Gottlieb accused Governor Newsom and Sacramento Democrats of playing a game of “one-upmanship” with the courts and the Constitution, suggesting they “didn’t get the memo” from the U.S. Supreme Court that the Second Amendment is not a second-class right.

“This may be a game for Newsom and the Democrats in Sacramento,” Gottlieb stated, “but defending the Second Amendment rights of California gun owners is not a game… You don’t fight crime by restricting the rights of peaceable, law-abiding citizens.”

The CCRKBA chairman expressed confidence in the outcome based on previous legal challenges. “We’re going to closely monitor this legal action, and based on previous results, we expect the court to act decisively.”
