LAKELAND, Fla. – A late-night dispute outside a local billiard hall turned fatal early Thursday morning, leaving a 48-year-old man dead following an exchange of gunfire. Detectives with the Lakeland Police Department are currently investigating the shooting, which took place in the parking lot of Wally’s Poolhall at 1136 East Main Street.

According to investigators, the violence broke out around 12:35 a.m. on March 5, 2026. Evidence and witness accounts suggest that an argument started between two patrons outside the establishment.

During the confrontation, one individual drew a handgun and opened fire on the other. The second man, identified by police as Steven Michael Magee, pulled his own firearm and returned fire.

While it remains unclear if the initial shooter was hit during the exchange, Magee was struck by the incoming rounds. Officers arriving on the scene attempted immediate life-saving measures before Magee was transported to Lakeland Regional Health.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later died from his injuries.

The investigation is still in its early stages and remains active as police search for the other party involved. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to reach out to Detective Jaime Smith at 863-834-8981 or via email at jaime.smith@lakelandgov.net.
